SCIENCE IN REAL LIFE

Have you ever wondered how forensic scientists answer the question "Who did it"? What has more sugar - a piece of gum or an Oreo cookie? Is there a science to making ice cream? What is the difference between lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, why do we need them, and how can we tell the difference in a laboratory? Find the answers to these questions as we dig into the science of life! This camp provides students with hands-on opportunities that will help spark an interest in science and a connection to every-day life and to possible careers.

#303 Dates: July 16 - July 20

Times: 9:00 a.m. - Noon

Grades: rising 6th - 9th

Cost: $ 200

STUDY OF MOTION (PHYSICS)

Students will learn about projectile motion: the study of objects in motion, specifically objects that fly through the air such as model rockets and baseballs. Students will study how objects move in the world and how this movement is related to the study of physics. Everything from how a baseball or football fly through the air to how cars go around turns without sliding will be covered. In this class, through experimentation and demonstration, students who wonder how the world works will find their answers.

#352 Dates: June 18 - June 22

Times: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Grades: rising 6th - 9th

Cost: $ 200

CHEMISTRY 101

The class will be an introduction to the basic concepts of chemistry including the structure of atoms, the periodic table, chemical bonds and chemical reactions. Students will learn how the tiny building blocks of matter make up everything that surrounds us. A basic understanding of what the world is made of will be developed through experimentation. This will lead to an understanding of how chemical and physical properties of different types of matter can be manipulated to form new compounds. Any student with an interest in chemistry will enjoy this course.

#353 Dates: July 9 - July 13

Times: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

TYPES OF ENERGY (PHYSICS/CHEMISTRY)

This class will be a study of different forms of energy including kinetic energy (motion), potential energy (stored), work/power, thermal energy (heat), and convection/conduction/radiation. Though energy is a constant all around us, many people fail to see how it transfers through all of the objects in our everyday lives. In this class, students will get a better understanding of how different types of energy move through all objects, be it as heat or motion or another form, to keep the world moving as we know it. Any student who is curious about the cycles that keep the world going will enjoy this camp.
